Iulian Bisericaru
Tales of Transformation Section, curated by Linda Peitz
Anca Poterasu Gallery is excited to showcase a solo presentation featuring new works by Iulian Bisericaru at Art Düsseldorf. While the artist has previously explored the postindustrial landscape of Romania, and later explored cacti as symbols of survival in a post-apocalyptic world, this new series is inspired by the rural landscape of Roșia Montană, closer to home, drawn from a region near Sibiu, where he lives, a region threatened by a controversial gold
mining project led by the Roșia Montană Gold Corporation (RMGC), a Canadian company that sought to extract gold from the area using cyanide, the destruction of ancient Roman sites, relocation of people from the villages, and risks to local ecosystems which has raised significant environmental and cultural concerns. Despite the promises of economic benefits, the project faced strong opposition from civil society, including local residents, environmental groups, and activists. Through protests and campaigns, the public pressure led to the rejection of the project by the Romanian Parliament in 2013. This victory highlighted the power of community movements in challenging corporate interests and protecting both the environment and cultural heritage. In 2021, Roșia Montană was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list for its exceptional Roman-era mining galleries and historical significance.
This time, Bisericaru turns his gaze closer to home, capturing a landscape from his immediate surroundings, where traces of human intervention subtly reshape the natural scenery. Through his paintings, he delves into themes of hope, loss, and sustainability, urging reflection on the pressing need to cherish nature, while considering more climate-conscious paths. The artist challenges us to rethink our relationship with the environment and seek sustainable alternatives for a better future.
