ZONA MACO, SUR
Booth ZMS4
Curated section by Luiza Texeira de Freitas
February, 2023
Anca Poterașu Gallery presents a dialogue between artists from different generations, exhibiting for the first time together, the duo Anetta Mona Chişa (b. 1975) & Lucia Tkáčová (b. 1977) and Megan Dominescu (b. 1997). Their practices are focused on a feminist discourse and are engaged with pertinent nowadays issues of social inequalities, ecological disasters and fast-paced political shifts.
The booth brings together Anetta Mona Chişa & Lucia Tkáčová’s powerful installation-work, 𝐷𝑜𝑤𝑛 𝑖𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑁𝑒𝑤 𝑈𝑝 (2013) and Megan Dominescu’s satirical portrayals of digital culture in textile rug-hooked rugs. Since 2000, Anetta Mona Chişa and Lucia Tkáčová have been collaborating to produce intellectual, acerbically humorous works that challenge gender stereotypes and the repressive insider-outsider dichotomies of political and cultural systems. Everything and everyone is fair game for their provocative, irreverent videos, installations, performances, and textbased works. We propose for the booth at SUR to address through their installation work, 𝐷𝑜𝑤𝑛 𝑖𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑁𝑒𝑤 𝑈𝑝, their stance on forgot or ignored feminist movements, reflecting on civil disobedience and women rights, even the more pertinent to the nowadays post pandemic context. The work has never been presented in South America before and will be adapted to the dimensions of the booth.
Megan Dominescu will create new tapestries in dialogue with the before-mentioned installation, in an intersectional manner, further connecting feminist issues with the current climate crisis and failed political discourses in a world of globalization, digitization, and increasing inequality. The up-and-coming artist brings a humorous, yet thoughtful resolve to the absurdity of our political and social realities, empathically underlining the contemporary collectivelyshared angst. We are sharing images from her portfolio for the present application, following on the lines of the booth concept. The artist will prepare new works for the participation at the fair in 2023.
